Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Walter Matthau

Directed by Stanley Donen

Available to stream on Amazon Prime

For the last movie of our monthlong celebration of Cary Grant, we have Charade. Young widow, Audrey Hepburn, aided by mysterious Cary Grant, is threatened by three men suspected of killing her husband. Clever dialogue and Parisian backdrop add to the charm of this classic film.

Why we love it:

Charade is a movie we can watch again and again. It has mystery, glamour, Paris, Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant -- what more could you want? Audrey Hepburn's character is one of the very few authentic women characters in movies of that time. She's spunky and outspoken, and she goes after what she wants, all while beautifully dressed and with a charming manner.

Fun Facts:

  • Fifty-nine year old Cary Grant was uneasy with the age gap between him and thirty-four year old Audrey Hepburn; at his insistence joking references were added about her youth and his middle-age. Grant was well-known for his handsome youthful looks and made several of his best movies after the age of fifty.

  • Audrey Hepburn's iconic wardrobe was designed by her friend and frequent couturier, Hubert de Givenchy. More about Audrey's fashion can be found in this New York Times article from 1963.

  • Henry Mancini wrote the music for the film, and the title song "Charade" was nominated for an Academy Award.
